Rice field in Tobetsu

Saturday June 3rd, 2006

Paddy rice fields in the neighborhood, recently filled with water for planting. Just beyond the fields is a series of hoop houses. I didn't find out what was growing in there.
The locals say "when the Cuckoo starts singing, it's time to start planting the rice seedlings." Indeed, I could hear them sing all morning.

Hey how are you, Liz? I'm doing fine. It's odd to be home, to be honest. Sometimes I feel as though I never left, other times I feel as though I was gone forever!
I'll be back to Vermont in a month! see you soon!
